The Parable of the Talents

Matthew 25:14-30

We each have gifts that have been entrusted to us by the Lord. Often times we discount these gifts and do not realize the value they have – in our lives and to those around us. The gift or the talent is often worth far more than we realize. In this parable, one talent would have been equivalent to a salary of 20 years of labour. This servant was indeed a rich and wealthy man! I wonder if perhaps he saw his talent as something small, especially compared to what the other servants received.

Is this how we view our own gifts the Lord has given us? Recently, I was able to exercise my gift of hospitality. Often, I do not see this as making an impact in someone’s life. But I was graciously rewarded with a beautiful sentiment from a friend who expressed how much this meant to her and her family. We are responsible for our gifts, no matter what they are. The Lord has given to each of us, just as He intended. And so we need to be good stewards of these gifts and share them freely. Don’t downplay your gift – be it hospitality, care, faith, wisdom or one of the many others. Take responsibility, walk confidently and double what the Lord has entrusted you with. It is then that we see the fruit of faith, salvation and transformation in the lives of those around us.

Have you been burying your gifts? How can you take the gifts God has entrusted to you and steward them well to bear Kingdom fruit?
